This service was conducted by Reverend David Bryant, with Zacharia Dekker as Music Director, Lay Reader and Intercessor Audi Geadah, and Reverend Bryant providing the homily. Carol McLean, sister to Charles, gives the eulogy, including remarks by Doug Weller, Eleanor and Charles’ son, and Carol and her son Vic, on guitar, sing ‘Falling Slowly’, with Vic for the song wearing a favourite golfing hat of his grandfather’s. (For the privacy of those receiving Communion the camera is focussed on the stained glass over the altar during that interlude.) Members of the Achill Choral Society, in which Charles was a long-time member, and for which he was for years on the Board as Librarian, sing John Rutter’s ‘For the Beauty of the Earth’ under the direction of Nancy Dettbarn, ACS Collaborative Pianist, with St. John’s Zacharia Dekker at the keyboard. Zach sings the Canadian composer Rupert Lang’s ‘Kontakion’ in tribute to Charles. The guests who braved the snowy conditions to attend the service are invited to a reception in the church hall.
